The Quilt Exhibition
As a service to the community we provide a multimedia museum quality exhibit that features as its main
component an antique quilt mounted in a free-standing display as shown in the photo below. There is enough
material to utilize wall pace in a room the size of the typical living- room sized space of approximately 100
square feet. Wall posters, maps and panels help to explain the history of this very rare 130 year old quilt. Much
more detail can be gotten from the recently published book The Content of Their Character, which is based on
these materials.
The exhibit puts a new light on the code for Underground Railroad. A reliable method of deciphering the code
on the quilt is made available on brochures so that viewers can perform an exercise on site using this method to
analyze the quilt. It is our impression that the intent of the makers of this quilt intended to use it as a device to
provide a physical demonstration of that same code. iewers can test this theory for themselves using the
proscribed method.

As mentioned above, this is a multi -media exhibition. Included are sound recordings from the 1903’s jazz era. These are from recordings made by Sam Allen and the Teddy Hill Orchestra. This orchestra performed as the stage band for Josephine Baker in Europe in the 1930’s. Original B&W Photos of this band from 1935-39 mounted and framed are available. This is an exhibition that requires medium to high security and temperature and humidity controls that are normal with quality museum exhibits. This exhibit is generally handled with the consultation of a museum curator. There are no outdoor exhibitions.
Live music presentation available
The foundation is proud to sponsor its own professional live jazz, band the Foundation Band. These recording
artists and virtuoso musicians provide an outstanding live concert and present a little jazz history along the way.
Overall it is a very lively performance. More information about the band can be gotten online by clicking here.
